About Voices in the Family
Voices in the Family was first aired as "Family Matters" in 1985 on Philadelphia's local NPR affiliate WHYY FM. From the onset, Dr. Gottlieb's relationship with his audience was described as "magical." At that time, most psychology shows had "experts" telling listeners what they should do. Gottlieb's approach was to provide gentle and insightful questions rather than answers. He would stay engaged with the callers for several minutes and actually learn a bit about their lives in addition to responding to their concerns.

Because of this unique approach, the show became the first of its kind in the country that introduced a lay audience to what respectful psychotherapy actually looked like. As a result, the show has won awards from organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Marital and Family Therapists, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and the New Jersey Academy of Marital and Family Therapists—to mention a few.

Since that time, the show has continued to grow and expand its subject matter. Today, listeners will frequently hear a variety psychological issues and problems addressed such as; childhood obesity, depression, marital conflict and many others. But now the show also covers the broader social and political issues and how they relate to one's individual psychology. Gottlieb says that it is always his intent to enable each listener to learn something about themselves each week.
